Lent

I have been reading on other Ladies blogs about what they will do for Lent. Have you decided what you will do? How about the kids? This year we will be focusing on doing for others instead of giving something up. I am still in the staging plans but plan to spend a lot of time working on this tomorrow. One thing that I know we will be doing is 40 days of giving. I am making bingo cards, each day or 2 times a day whatever I end up deciding, we will draw a bingo number, all the cards will have the same numbers just different placement, you will then make it off and then do what the card says. Like give up a toy, piece of clothing ect... I will then give them a choice, give it to good will or a like charity or sell it. We do swap meets so they can take it with and try to sell it. But here is the catch they can not have the money, at the end of Lent any money they raised from doing this they will then need to donate some where. And to make it a little more fun when you get a bingo you will get something, like pick out a movie to watch, have a sleep over with siblings on the pull out couch, this is a very coveted thing in our house : ) We will also be doing a sacrifice jar and a Lent cross, which is like a Jesse tree but for Lent. We will also try to make one quilt each to donate to a charity a send quilts to. I might even try to get us out volunteering with a senior center and the animal shelter. And of course we will pray!! Let me know what you have planned.

An AHHA! Moment and Great Quotes

First I will start off with the great quotes since I love a bit of inspiration.

I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made;
-PSALMS 138: 14

I just have really liked that verse since I first heard it.

God made families not schools.
-from a mom that unschools

I thought that hit the nail on the head. I have been struggling since starting to home school, trying to find what fit for our family. Every time I find something that seems to work after a few weeks it has lost its fit and I am again fussing with the kids to get it done and find the interest to plan the lesson. Tonight I read Christian Unschooloing by Teri J Brown with Elissa M Wahl and it was my ahha! moment. Unschooling was every thing I wanted our "schooling" to be and had been trying to do with my plans. After reading the book I think I have a clearer understanding of what I am going to do, of what will make sense for us. So the next couple of days will be spent by me redoing our "school" room and turning it into our "learning" room. (I knew when I named our school the Sacred Heart of Jesus Learning Center instead of school it was for a reason.) And boy howdy do I have my work cut out for me, I want to go to the St. Vincent De Paul and get some shelves for my sewing room and the learning room. Right now I have my craft, paint, markers, ect.. for the kids in busy boxes. Which are nice because they stack on each other and do not take up much room. They are very inconvenient to keep things in that you use with any regularity. I want to make things very accessible so that if they want to paint it is all right there. Or what ever they want to do. I have all these great ideas that now that I am thinking them it's like duh! Why wouldn't you have done that from the start. But it's all done in HIS perfect timing, so I am sure there was a reason. I am going to make an idea jar, so when they do not have anything to do, they can pick an idea. It will be something short, like draw an animal and it's home or look up a word in the dictionary. I will also make a running list of ideas for group projects in my "Big Book of Every Thing", a list of books I want to check out, and of books I might get to read together. I am also going to put together folders with work sheets in them so if we do want to do worksheets they are there ready to go. I need to concentrate on making the space ready to learn and easy to learn in. With every thing readily available. Hmmm.... maybe I should get to it. I will post before and after pictures when I am done, hopefully I will be done before February is done.

Frying bacon and Project Runway

My son made bacon for the first time, he was very proud. Although I think he looks way too excited in this picture, haha.

My girls decided that they both wanted to make outfits by their selves and without a pattern. Clare made hers a dress that turns into a skirt and then a shirt to go with Maria made a 2 piece outfit. I love it, listening to them was priceless. I was not allowed in the sewing room, although I did sneak in and take a few pictures.

They are a little to risque to be worn for anything other then playing inside, but the had fun and practiced their sewing skills. And they were so proud of them selves.  And I was proud of them too, all of them.

LEGOs and St. Paul

We did not do much "schooling" last week and we have been in a little bit of a rut since before the holidays, so we are starting tomorrow off with a bang. I found a LEGO figures print out  over at Waltzing Matilda and got so excited about it I decided to do a LEGO day. We will have some LEGO math, by making fractions and doing some sorting, we will also do some LEGO multiplication. The fractions we will make lets say 3/4, they will show me 3/4 by connecting 3 red and 1 blue. I will have them sort in to color piles, size piles, and may sort into a sub group, like of the red pile sort by size. For the multiplication I was thinking of doing 2 different things, 1 I will have them grab 2 handfuls of LEGOs and multiply them, then I also thought of lining up a few LEGOs and we could work on order of operations, I will use pipe cleaners to make parentheses, I will be limited by the numbers because I plan on having the number they work with be the number of nubs (the part of the LEGO that locks into the one on top of it) on each LEGO. I am going to have a LEGO maze contest, we will see who can make the most complicated maze out of LEGOs. And we will make ourselves into LEGO figures.
As for the feast of The Conversion of St. Paul, I print out this color page. And we will read from The One Year Book of Saints, Fifty-Seven Saints for Boys and Girls, The Communion of Saints: Sanctity Through the Centuries. We will read from Symbols of our Faith about why St. Paul's symbol is the open Scriptures over a unsheathed sword. We will draw our own pictures of his symbol and paint them using our homemade paint. We will review the names of the Sacred Vessels by doing a matching game. Corinthians 16:13-14 will be our handwriting, and we will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary. Sounds like a pretty full and exciting day to me. Now I just have to get all the things I need in order so the day flows smoothly.

Bump+

I just watched the trailer for Bump+. I am undecided if I will watch another. While I think it is good for people to think and talk about these issues. I am just not sure I feel the need to watch it, but I am curious to see what the people "choose". I pray that this show will at least touch a few hearts to change and choose life. I would have to say that before we are able to change the hearts of people on the issue of abortion we first need to change peoples hearts on what is considered o.k. "relationship" practices. Because if people will not accept responsibility when it comes to those issues then how can we expect them to accept responsibility after the baby has been conceived. We can not begin to understand what some women go through so I think we should not judge but PRAY!!

Common misconceptions about me

Posting about my conversion has got me thinking about the common misconceptions about my life that people have commented on, and I thought I would share them with you.

  • That I have long hair because I am religious, I have in fact had long hair most of my life. And have recently decided to stop this cycle I have had where I let my hair grow long and I love it! Then something happens and I get frustrated and cut it. Then I spend the next 6 months hating it. I do like to have long hair because it makes me feel more feminine, and I do think that being proud of being a women please God, but I think women can still be feminine and proud to be the women God made them with short hair.
  • That I am a stay at home mom who sews, home schools, cooks from scratch, ect.. because of my faith. I did or wanted to do these things before I found my faith. I tell people I should have lived 85 years ago, because I would have been the perfect 30's housewife.
  • We home school for faith reasons, while this is a big reason not the only one. It was just a really nice perk, the main reason was because of educational and social reasons.
  • That I don't drink because of my faith, I don't drink because growing up I watched my alcoholic aunt and dad drink, and I still have to deal with my dad's drinking.
  • I only wear skirts because of my religion, this again is one of those things that I have always liked, and do because it makes me feel feminine. And I do wear pants from time to time.
Does anyone else have people make assumptions about you when they find out  about your faith? I try to use these times when people make comments to share my faith, but feel it gets old sometimes about things that I think are silly, like how long my hair is for example. I know some religions the women do not cut their hair. But if I feel it brings me closer to God to wear long hair, is it really a big deal to you? I do not say that everyone needs to do it, I simply say it is one of the many ways I try to remind myself to do as God wants. I am sure most of these people are not religious in any way. So I try to be patient when I give my answers. I guess I just need to vent a little, thanks for listening.

conversion part 2

O.k. so I let off where we were attending the Church we do now, I started rcia in the fall of that year and I'll tell you I could really have cared less about going. I was only going because I thought if my husband and children were Catholic I might as well be too. I spent most of the first part of the year trying to find a reason so that I couldn't go, maybe the kids were sick or I had a headache. Around Christmas of that year I started to not mind going to rcia and was actually liking it. In January I was diagnosed with uterine and cervical cancer. The people at rcia prayed for me and I was happy they did then the deacon and his wife who teach rcia asked if the Priest could came and pray over me. And I laughed a little on the inside, but said o.k. The next week after class the deacon, his wife, and Father stayed after class to pray for me, They started by giving me Holy Water from Lourdes to drink no less, I was a bit shocked that I was really supposed to drink it. Then they laid hands on me and Father started to pray, I could barely hear him he prayed so quite and I don't know what he said, but as soon as he started praying, I can't even describe it. I felt like I could not even breathe. It was truly a Holy experience. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it afterwards. But then Father came to the house the day before my surgery, I gad a complete hysterectomy and had my ovaries taken as well. I am fine by the way the cancer had not spread and I required no further treatment. And when he prayed over me, I could not receive the anointing of the sick because I was not Catholic at the time,  I felt that same Holy, God is with you, washed over by the Holy Spirit feeling. When I was waiting for them to put me under for surgery the next day, I just laid there in the operating room praying, "Jesus I trust in you" over and over until I was put under. It was that day that I really decided to Love God as I came to realize that He loved me. And I have spent my days since then trying to please God and do His will. I was going to be received into the church that year but because I was off for my surgery I missed the Easter Vigil. So I went back to rcia the next year and loved it. And I came into the church last year. Since turning my life over to God I have felt His love everywhere and in everything I do. It amazes me every time I have a God moment, and I love teaching my children about our faith, the saints, and spreading the Good News.

Inspiring Quotes

I found these quotes in 2 prayer books I have and found them to be very inspiring and they spoke to me a bit. And I thought I would share them with you, I hope they touch you as they did me.

This one is from a book of the Stations of the Cross book from 1956
Christ in torment hangs,
She beneath beholds the pangs,
Of her dying, glorious Son.

These 2 are from a Hail Holy Queen book from 1928

A Mother is she who can take the place of all others,
but whose place no one else can take.
-Cardinal Mermillod

However poor your home may be, it is in reality your palace,
if peace and holiness abide there.

I have to say I love these prayer books, I got them from  the Freecycle website along with some other old Catholic books and they fit me like a glove. I can sit and read them over and over. I love the Hail Holy Queen, it has advice and council for Catholic girls and women, and it is wonderful. I have looked for it on line but do not think that this version is in print anymore. It's too bad it really is a good book.

AHHH!!!

Well I have joined another home school group from our area, they are very active, meet at different times during the week and you just go to the ones that are things you would like to do and work for your schedule. And from what I've read about the members I think this will be a much better fit for us.
We have not done much school work this week, I gave everyone some handwriting, worksheets and some workbook pages to do. I have been so busy this week and it's only Tuesday, haha. I feel a little guilty when we don't have "school" time each day, but that is part of why we do this to learn in different ways, and different things and to "break" when we need to.
I really need to do some picking up and organizing around here, it drives me bonkers when the house is messy.
I hope to finish my conversion story tonight or tomorrow.
I was just fitted for a tiara, and in case you were wondering i need a big one. so says my youngest daughter.
I will be off to the fabric store soon to get some new patterns and some supplies, I have a lot of sewing to do.
I have decided to hit some up coming craft shows and swap meets to sell my wears, if any one knows of some good ones in the NE area of Illinois let me know.
I have been taking some new pictures for my profile picture, most of them did not turn out. But I think I might use one any way.

my life in a post, part 1

I thought it might be nice for people reading this to have some background on my life, so I will do my life in a post. I guess this would also be like my conversion story.
I grew up living with my mom in S.W. Michigan. My dad lived in Illinois, I saw him mostly on holidays and summer breaks. My mom always believed in God, but until recently need not feel the need for organized religion. When I was fresh out of high school, about 3 weeks, I found out I was pregnant I then decided to live with and marry my then boyfriend, although was quick to find out he was, to put it nicely, a loser. Several years, 2 more babies, and a few dozen other girlfriends for him, and 1 more baby that wasn't mine, later I filed for divorce. At the urging of my mom I decided to go and apply at the new IHOP they were building in our area. I got the job and the first week after they opened meet the Manager, who had not been there much because he lived in Iowa and was still working at an IHOP there. Well let me tell you it was LOVE at first sight. 2 months later we moved in together, 2 weeks later we got married.  A short time later we back to Iowa, there was a church 2 doors down that was Luthren, and had a preschool, so we attended very irregular and my youngest went to the school. Now my husband grew up Catholic, but thought it was better that the kids go to a church, if the only other option was no church. We then moved to Wisconsin and the only church in town happened to be Catholic, so we went. I would like to break for a quick second and say growing up my step-sister was Catholic and went to a Catholic school, I was always fascinated with what she learned in religion class, nuns, priests and the sign of the cross. back to the story. My son was in 2nd grade so we signed up all the kids for ccd, which was sunday morning before mass, so we went to church almost every Sunday.  I was going to sign up for rcia but the class had already started and the girl in charge said it was best to start at the beginning of the year. So I decided to to wait. Now I would like to say I was not excited about joining the church, I was doing it more to be the same as the rest of the family. I figured if we ever moved and found a differnet church we would go there. I thought all churches were interchangable. We would go to which ever was closest to our house. So my son took his first communion. I started to take a little interest in the church towards the end of that Spring.  That Summer we moved back to Michigan and I enrolled the kids in Catholic school and I started to kind of like this Catholic thing. But I put off joining rcia because I just didn't feel like going. My middle child was going to take her 1st communion that year, but since the kids went to church in school we did not go alot on Sundays. In the middle of that year we moved to Illionis, we move alot. I knew we needed tofind a church soon so my daughter could make her communion, so with in a week we found a church, which happened to be the church my dad went to as a child. I will take another break to say my dad went to catholic school as a child and took his 1st communion in the Catholic Church. All of which I did not know until we moved here and were church hunting. My dads, dads family was Baptist and his moms family was Mormon and to avoid a fight my grandma decided to raise my dad and my aunt Catholic. So we started to go to that church, and we still do. And I decided to go to rcia. I will break her eso my post is not to long, as the next part is probably to long all by it's self. I will try to finish it this week

what we did in school today

I woke up this morning and had a really really bad migrane and decided to let the kids have a movie day so I could just lay there and rest. I will usually let them rent movies from the library each week when we go, they are free because we rent the vhs tapes and because we do not watch much t.v. this lets them watch something that I don't have to worry about. So today we watched, Chicken Run, Ella Enchanted and James and the Giant Peach. It worked out nicely, I got the rest I needed, and they had a fun day of rest they needed.

making paint

We decided to make paint the other day, we did this for brownies but have also done this for school.
the recipe we used is very simple. you take a mason jar (if you do not own mason jars any jar with a tight screw lid works, you could also just use a cup and stir it, although it might be clumpy and is not as fun) fill it about half way with water add food color to make the color you want, we do primary colors and then mix the paint to make any other colors they need. screw on the lid and give it a shake, next you remove the lid and add regular baking flour (you could probably use wheat flour if that is all you have) I will start off by adding 3-5 TBSP, screw lid on tight and let your kid shake it!! For about 1-2 minutes, remove lid and then test it by dipping your paint brush in it when you pull the paint brush out you can tell if it needs a little more shaking or more flour, that part is dependent on how you like your paint. Grab some paper and enjoy!!! This paint will last at least a couple of weeks if kept in the jar with the lid on, next time you want to use it just give it a shake and you are ready to go.

reasons I love my kids

  • the other day my son comes up to me, rosary in hand and asks me if I have a paper that tells him how to pray it by himself
  • my son decided to carry a rosary and sacrifice beads in his pocket to remind him to do good, and he is using them!
  • when asked at brownies what her favorite thing she received for Christmas was my youngest daughter says, "I had my whole family at my house all day"
  • my middle daughter decided to become a pen pal with a nun
  • she also decided to make rosaries to give to people who did not have them so the whole world can pray the rosary, could this be some guidance from the Holy Mother???
These are the things that make all the times they fuss and don't listen well worth it!!! And it makes me soooo happy I have been blessed with the vocation of motherhood!!!

Girl scouts

We have decided to drop from girl scouts now, due to their support of planned parenthood.

I just wanted to rant a little

So today we were out with at my youngest daughters Brownie meeting and I had asked, not really to anyone, that 2 chairs be brought over to the table. Now my son being the gentlemen that I am trying to teach him to be got up and grabbed 2 chairs. Now this is where my ranting starts, another mom stops him tells him to put the chairs back and tells the girls to get up and get them "because they are perfectly able to get chairs by themselfs". I am a little upset by this and tell the other mom, "he did that because I am always telling him to be like a gentlemen". Now the other mom gets loud and says "that is all fine and good and maybe if this wasn't Girl Scouts but we are girls and are empowered(she practically shouted that word) we do not need men to do things for us we are girls, and we will do things by ourselfs!!!!" and she wasn't saying this in a nice way it was a disrespectful way to men. I was very upset by this because my son was there and just trying to do as he is being raised and then to be yelled at for it... after her out burst I really did not know what to say, I just dropped it and moved on with the meeting. It really makes me upset to think that some people will knock him just for being a good person. Or think that he is putting women down when he is just trying to be nice. And so what if we are Girl Scouts, that means we can't let men or boys be nice to us??? I was going to try to finish out the year( we had already decided to drop from girl scouts, for to many reasons to list right now ) but if we are going to have to deal with stuff like this I might just drop now. Like a friend says the commune is looking better and better!
Thanks for letting me rant.

fun with school

Today my son did science with clay, he took 3 recipes for clay made each one and then made a chart on differences and similarities of each, which he liked best ect...
recipe #1          cornstarch and water, you just take a bowl of water and mix in water it should
be sort of like glue and will harden when you play with it and when you stop it
will run off your hands, it is very much like quick sand. this washes away easily
                                      with water

recipe #2          2 cp baking soda, 1cp cornstarch, 1 1/2 cps water, mix soda and starch in
saucepan mix in water boil over medium heat until boiling, stir out any lumps and
cook until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes. it goes from being very loose
to very thick in about 2 seconds. put it on a plate covered with a damp rag
to cool, we added a few drops of food coloring to it before it cooled and
then kneaded it to mix the color in. watch out it is very warm to start out
with, parents should check the temp before letting little hands knead the clay.

recipe #3          2/3 cp salt, 1/3 cp baking soda, 1/2 cp constarch, 1/3 cp water, 1/4 cp water
in saucepan mix, salt, soda, and 1/3 cp water bring to a boil, in bowl mix
starch and and 1/4 cp water. when 1st mix boils pour into the bwol with 2nd mix
stir until smooth let dry about 2 hours before using.

We liked recipe #2 the best it was very smooth and holds it's shape nicely. My son decided to call it "mashed potato clay", it really does look like mashed potatoes when it first gets done cooking. Both recipe #2 and #3 can air harden. And you can paint them when they are done, or add food color before they cool. If you do not want them to dry out just put them in a ziploc baggie and throw them in the fridge.

Alter server meeting

Last night we went to alter server training for my son. It was pretty neat, we just moved into our new church on Christmas eve and they are now doing things a little more traditionally. They learned how to do the incense, I love the smell of the incense. It was pretty awesome, I just sat and prayed the Rosary and to smell the incense!!!
Today for school I tried something a little different, I let the kids decide what they wanted to do. They each picked what subject they wanted to do for the day and then they made their lesson plan. I made them write it out on a piece of paper and then turn it in at the end of the day. I was thinking then they suggusted this, wow maybe I will be able to catch up on some of my own things I need to do. But I still spent the day watching "plays" and scince experiments, and listening to stories. But it was a nice change and they did learn and have fun. Which is my main goal for everyday, not just "school" days. I also found out that my kids really like science, art (and creative arts), bible and reading. I will post separately what we did for school.

Gratituesday

I saw this over at "Heavenly Homemakers" and thought "that is a great idea!" and this morning I definitely need to remind my self what I am thankful for, haha. So here it goes.

When I actually sit down to think about it I am thankful for so many things it is hard to chose just one.
But I will try...

I am thankful that our Parish Priests are AWESOME!! They are all young men (ranging from 28-41) and they take the time to talk to all the kids and really just be awesome mentors to everyone.

I am also thankful for little boys, snow and lego boxes full of "guys"

National Thank You Day

Today is National Thank You Day, remember to thank someone today for something they do for you. You might just make their day!!

my daybook

Outside my window... Dark, quite, and a warm 12 degrees
I am thinking... how much I enjoy being the first one up (technically my husband was up first but he already left for work)
I am thankful for... my husband
From the learning rooms...George Washington, wind chills and National Thank You Day
From the kitchen... eggs and fruit
I am wearing... my p.j.'s
I am creating... reusable lunch and snack baggies, like ziploc but not made from yucky plastic. I got the idea from over here, (forgive me if I didn't link this right it is the first time I have tried this)
I am going... to take my son to an alter server practice tonight, and my daughters to one on Thursday.
I am reading... nothing
I am hoping... that the kids have a good day,
I am hearing... kids waking up
Around the house... a few sewing and craft projects I would like to get some work done on.
One of my favorite things... my son
A few plans for the rest of the week... lots of school, presidents, and the constitution
A picture I am sharing...

Well I haven't posted as much as I wanted, but I have been under the weather. A friend of mine told me about pure unfiltered apple cidar vinegar. You drink about 1-2 tsp, mixed in tea or juice. And it really does work I have been feeling better my leaps and bounds since I started drinking it 2 days ago. I almost feel as good as new. We went to the homeschool group, it wasn't quite what I expected. The kids had fun, but it was more like a fun day. The way it was described it was more educational. We might go back from time to time but not every week. I think what I might do is just host some days with other families we know to do fun educational things. After all this is school! I am all for the kids having fun, hanging out with friends and such but when it is school time then I prefer they learn something, and if they can have fun and learn all the better.

Well today we go to a homeschool "group" for the first time. A couple of other families we know go to this group and enjoy it. They do 6 week sessions for their classes. So it switches it up to keep it interesting. I think we will enjoy it. My plan is to post on this blog in the morning before everyone gets up. I will post on both this we did yesterday and things we plan on doing that day. I will also link to fun activies that we have done or want to try. I will probably give you a review of a product, book or movie from time to time. Have  a great day.

Amy

A little bit more about me

Well this is my first post, so I will start out telling you a little bit more about myself. Please forgive any spelling errors, spelling is not my strong suit. I am a 31 yr. old mother to 3 wonderful kids whom I home school. My oldest is a boy whom I will call Pio 12yrs, my middle is a girl whom I will call Maria 11 yrs, and my youngest is a girl whom I will call Clare 8 yrs. (I also have 2 children that my husband had before we met that live with their mothers, K. 17yrs and A. 14yrs.) My children will be starting a blog soon that will be all about there life as home schooled kids. We pretty much have a zoo around here. We have a coon hound dog named Pascal, 2 cats named Magic and Suade, and 3 guinea pigs, Buttercup, Spotty, and Sally. My favorite things to do are sew, read and hang out with my family. I run a sewing business from home, and I do internet orders for any one interested. I teach 2nd grade C.C.D. at my local parish. Please pray for us, we will be making their First Holy Communion this year. I am part of Elizabeth Ministry, which is a great group to join if it is at your parish. I enjoy making my family meals from scratch and canning. I love Jesus and hope that this blog will help spread the love and joy I have for Jesus and the Church to others, and hope it will be a source of encouragement to all who read it.

BLESSINGS,
Amy
